Pipe bomb made safe in Carrickfergus following a security alert

ARMY bomb squad officers defused a pipe bomb on Wednesday morning in Co Antrim.

A security alert was sparked following the discovery of a suspicious object on the Larne Road in Carrickfergus.

Roads in the area were closed while the Army team examined the device.

It was later made safe after being declared viable.

Police have removed the pipe bomb for forensic examination.

All roads have now reopened.
