A security alert outside a Catholic Church in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim has ended.

Army bomb experts who attended the scene at Mary’s Star of the Sea on the Shore Road declared it as an elaborate hoax.

There was a hoax bomb alert there last month, which meant Mass had to be moved to another church.

Parish Priest Father Anthony Alexander said it was the third time they have been targeted.

“I’m very annoyed with the whole thing because I can’t understand why they are picking on our church,” he said.

“We have been worshipping there since 1967. It’s very disruptive to all the people, especially the elderly who come to the church, it really upsets them.”

The Shore Road has been closed from the Hazelbank Roundabout citywards to Doagh Road but it has now re-opened.

On Saturday, a security alert on the Hightown Road in Glengormley was declared a hoax.

There have been a spate of security alerts in recent months in the Newtownabbey area.

Devices have been left at St Mary’s On The Hill. One was found last month on a disable ramp leading to a church door.
