POLICE were called to the scene of a security alert on Saturday night in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim.

It followed the discovery of a suspicious object near St Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic church.

The Shore Road was closed in both directions between the Doagh Road and Hazelwood roundabout on Saturday night.

Alliance Newtownabbey Councillor Billy Webb said the item was found at St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church.

It is the fourth time the church has been targeted in recent months.

Cllr Webb said: “It is completely unacceptable to target a place of worship, especially at Easter, one of the most important times in the church calendar.

“A number of elderly people have again been forced to leave their homes due to the actions of mindless thugs.

“If anybody has any information about this alert then I would urge them to contact the police.”
