DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have charged a second man with the murders of a couple in east Belfast.

The 32-year-old is due in Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning.

He was arrested last Thursday at an address in west Belfast and taken to Musgrave Street PSNI station for questioning.

MIT detectives were granted an extension by a court to his detention in custody.

The bodies of Finbarr McGrillen, 42, and Caron Smyth, 40, were found by police at Ravenhill Court on 13 December.

Officers made the grim discovery after a local noticed the front door to their flat had been damaged.

Last Thursday, a 33-year-old man appeared in court charged with their murders.

Shaun Hegarty, of Grainne House, in the New Lodge area of north Belfast, is the former lover of Ms Smyth.

The murder inquiry is headed up by Det Chief Inspector Una Jennings.

She has made a number of appeals for information about the murders.
