MORE than 400 people at the Belfast office of global law firm Allen & Overy (A&O) are hoping to get into peak condition thanks to a new initiative aimed at boosting workplace health and wellbeing.

The firm’s ‘Be Well’ programme will promote activity and resilience for employees of all ages and abilities and provides free nutritional advice, access to in-house fitness classes, therapeutic [or sports] massages and discounts on selected fitness equipment.

Developing long-term programmes to support workplace health and wellbeing is high on the agenda for many businesses and recent figures indicate that sickness and absenteeism costs the UK economy an average of GBP29 billion each year.

This programme is part of A&O’s wider strategy to provide ‘best in class’ personal and professional development opportunities within the Belfast Support Services Centre which supports a network of 46 worldwide offices.

Ciaran McCallion, Human Resources Director at Allen & Overy, said:

“Employees in most competitive sectors manage workloads and stress as a normal part of a daily routine. The ‘Be Well’ campaign is about encouraging a positive work/life balance for employees and offering a different route to expert advice and classes.

We have a thriving office environment because we take time invest in people’s careers and wellbeing.

“The uptake has been very positive and we recognise the introduction of new wellbeing work activities will benefit the company, enhance our reputation as an employer and continue to attract a talented, motivated workforce here in Belfast.”

Jacqueline Wilson, Senior Business Change Manager, at A&O said:

“We know it is really important that we both support and encourage our people to be active and to take responsibility for their own health.

“This programme brings together different strands of support to create long term changes in habits and promote health as a core value in our workplace culture.

“Allen & Overy has taken great care to recruit high quality people who can perform to the highest standards in support of our global operation.

“Focusing on staff wellbeing can bring about long term benefits including; lower absenteeism and attrition, stress reduction, increased productivity, improved communication and a boost in staff morale.”
