ROADS REOPEN AFTER NORTH BELFAST SECURITY ALERT ‘AN ELABORATE HOAX’

BOMB SQUADPOLICE say a security alert on the northern outskirts of Belfast was an elaborate hoax.

The alert was sparked after a suspicious object was found in Abbeydale Close near Newtownabbey police station earlier this morning.

The M5 countrybound and A2 Shore Road, from Hazelbank roundabout to Station Road, were closed for several hours but have now re-opened.

Some public transport services were also affected but are now getting back to normal.

Army Technical Officers who were called to the scene have removed the object for further examination.

Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Reid said: “I would like to thank the local people who have been inconvenienced by this operation for their patience and understanding while police conducted the clearance.

“I would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area recently or who has any information which may help police with our enquiries to contact officers at Newtownabbey or detectives in Antrim on 101.”
