A three-pronged investigation has been launched following the death of a 38-year-old man being held on remand in Maghaberry Prison.

The death happened at the top security facility this morning, the Prison Services has confirmed.

He is the latest in a long list of prisoners held at the jail who have died.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and investigations have been launched by the PSNI, the Coroner and the Prisoner Ombudsman.

Ronnie Armour, head of the Prison Service, said: “I would like to extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of the man who has died in Maghaberry this morning.

“My thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
