On-the-run convicted gunman James Hunter has absconded from Maghaberry prison

POLICE are on the trail of a prisoner who has absconded from Maghaberry prison after failing to return to custody following a period of pre-release testing.

James Hunter is serving a sentence for possession of firearm or ammunition with intent to endanger life.

The 56-year-old was also behind bars at the top security prison for attempted robbery and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The Prison Service launched an investigation after Hunter failed to return to prison on Sunday, January 6.

He is described as being 1.73 metres  tall with blue eyes and brown hair, of medium build with a fresh complexion.

Hunter was last seen wearing a blue Parka coat with a fur hood, a grey sweatshirt and blue jeans.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “At this time we are focused on returning him to custody.

“We would ask anyone with information to contact the PSNI on 101 immediately.”
